So a little further than 15 miles on the Erie Canal, but you get the idea. Waterford is the first stop on the canal, the first in the “Waterford Flight” of 5 locks that are transited non-stop and provide the highest lift (about 150 ft) over the shortest distance of any canal in the world. This is our second passage through the locks, we traveled this route in late summer of 2008 as our “shakedown cruise” and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing pace of travel through the canal system.
So this is the first leg of the Down East Loop, a trip that will take us approximately 3,000 miles in about 4 months. The graphic above shows about a third of the loop, our location is currently Waterford, the 1st left hand turn past Albany.
We cruised through Albany yesterday, on our leg from Kingston. The previous day’s run was from Haverstraw (just south of Peekskill and on the west shore). Because this is our second trip this way and we have a lot of unexplored area to cover, our focus will be more on travel than sightseeing, probably until we get to new areas. We haven’t formulated an itinerary- and likely won’t – other than a loose time frame in order to get us back to Baltimore by October. So posts for the leg along the Erie Canal may be a bit sparse, since they’ll essentially be duplicates of those from 2008. If we encounter anything new and remarkable, I’ll add a post!

You’re in the same playground as a nice sailboat named Blue Jacket – you’ll probably run into Geoff along your travels. Use me as an excuse to get to know each other!

I guess you’re headed in the wrong direction to meet us in Ocracoke the week of July 17th-24th, huh? Darn! I just hope that oil doesn’t get there before we do!
Safe travels to you!
