Our plans for the Thanksgiving Day Holiday were simply to make beautiful Beaufort before noon, and spend the holiday and a few more days on the hook. Beaufort is a wonderful stopover, with a good anchorage, easy access to shore, and a beautiful town to keep us occupied. We arrived around 10AM after a leisurely cruise from Ashepoo River, where we spent the night on the hook.
When we arrived in Beaufort, we were happy to see some cruising acquaintances in Fred on North Star, a 32 Nordic Tug, and Steve & Joan Atkins on Carolina. Steve is the former mayor of Elizabeth City; we met during our stopover there last year, and had he and wife Joan aboard for a late dinner during our stay. It was fun to renew our acquaintance, and in the process, we learned that we were just in time for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner that St. Helena Parish has been hosting for the past 30 years or so. The dinner began as stewardship for the homeless, and has continued, with folks of all walks enjoying a home-cooked dinner. Those who are so inclined donate, but it’s voluntary, and seconds are encouraged! A plate of turkey, filling, cranberry, sweet potatoes and green beans, and a groaning board of desserts. No one leaves hungry! It was an enjoyable time, and the food was great! Weather for Thanksgiving Day here, clear sunny skies, light breezes, and temperatures in the 70’s. Another beautiful day in the Sunny South!
We’ll spend a few days here in Beautiful Beaufort, we want to take full advantage of the weather we’ve been blessed with!
