Treasure Cay

We departed Man O War late Wednesday morning and took the 16 nm hop to Treasure Cay. We picked up a mooring in the harbor outlying the marina, and headed ashore to check things out. The mooring is not something we’d want to rely on in a blow, but with settled weather, we’ll be fine for the short time we’ll be tied off. A real advantage of the clear water, despite the fact that the water here in the Abacos is not nearly as clear as what we became accustomed to in the Exumas.

The beach here at Treasure Cay is world famous, and a visit to the beach, our primary reason for coming, was 1st on our activity list. The beach is spectacular, we spend a few hours there with the dogs, and remarked how crowded the beach was compared to what we’ve seen in the Bahamas. Whereas we were frequently alone on the beach, the beach here, about a two mile crescent, had people… there must have been about 30 people on the two mile span of beach. CROWDED!

The area is nice, although a marked departure from the out island flavor of the Exumas; it’s more “resort-ish” with Lauderdale-style condos lining the bulkheaded confines of the large harbor, grass, and landscaping. Still, the signature Bahamas “frozen-in-time” construction is everywhere one looks, so there’s no mistaking it for the US!

We’ll move on later this morning, heading toward Great Guana Cay, and the notorious “Nippers”, just for a fun visit. Weather for the predictable future promises to be settled, so we’re debating whether to take advantage of the calm for a smooth crossing, or to squeeze another week or so into our time here and chance another crossing window. Hard choices!
