Waterford, NY

Locking through Federal Lock, we leave tidal waters, and enter the NY canal system. We arrive at Waterford on Friday afternoon. Waterford has a very nice visitor center, close to town, and a great place for walking tours. Peebles Island is a State park, the former site of a shirt factory where the sanforizing process was invented.

Waterford marks the junction between the Erie and Champlain canals, and Lock 2 of the NY canal system. Our locking from this point will be “up”. Locking up is more turbulent, the water comes up under the boat, and pushes the boat into the sides of the lock. Fenders, lots of them are a must. They really earn their keep on the ride up the lock wall. It’s amazing that they hold up with all the pressure they absorb.
